I try each summer to read all of the nominee books from the Kansas children's book awards, the William Allen White award. This summer I am having a difficult time getting motivated to read. I see posts from friends who are reading the you know what book, the one with "50" in the title, the one you apparently can't put down. No such luck, I have a few more books to knock off of this nominee list.
I just finished reading The Strange Case of Origami Yoda by Tom Angleberger. I have to admit that I dreaded reading this book. Look at the cover. Star Wars?! Not for me. But I actually found it truly enjoyable.
Everyone in school thinks Dwight is strange and uncool. Then he makes a finger puppet from Origami paper. Origami Yoda seems to have the answers to everyone's biggest problems. Tommy decides to make a scientific journal to record each person's encounter with Origami Yoda. One journal entry tells about Kellen who accidently gets water on his pants in the bathroom, he knows what everyone will think when he returns to class. Origami Yoda's advice pays off for him, "All of pants you must wet." Sometimes Origami Yoda's advice sounds crazy, but it always pays off. The biggest question, though, is why the uncool Dwight doesn’t
take Origami Yoda's advice.
