The William Allen White Children’s Book Award program was founded in 1952 by Ruth Garver Gagliardo, a specialist in children’s literature for Emporia State University. One of the few literary awards that asks young readers to choose the winners, the program is directed by Emporia State University and supported in part by the Trusler Foundation. Grades 3-6 participate in this program at Oil HIll. Students who read 8 or more WAW books this year will be eligible to attend a special breakfast in April.

Grades 1st-6th participate in the Accelerated Reader Program. This is a reading incentive program that is web based. AR is designed to test student comprehension after he/she has finished a book. *Students earn points for each successful test.
*Point awards will be awarded at the end of each month at an all school assembly.
*Students will receive a prize after 10 and 25 points and then every 25 more that they earn.
*Prizes are in the form of books, candy, activities, toys and certificates, etc.
*Students who have read 1,000,000 or more words will be recognized for their achievement.
AR bookfind can help your child find a book that is at his/her own reading and interest level. Virtually every book has an AR test. Students are not restricted to reading only books from the COE Library. Use the link below to find out if a book from your own bookshelf at home has an AR test.
